Set realistic tennis resolutions this year

Okay, so the last article was about setting New Year's resolutions, but here's another good article I came across that talks about making some realistic tennis resolutions.

I’m pretty sure Santa didn’t leave a topspin backhand in your stocking, and I’d be surprised if the gifts under the tree included a sliced serve that you can carve way out wide in the deuce court.
With the holidays past, and your tennis game still lacking the tools you’ll need to improve your results, you are reduced to resorting to the dreaded New Year’s resolution.

Let’s examine some of the options.

1. Lose weight.
2. Work out at the gym at least three days a week.
3. Lay off alcohol.
4. Quit smoking.
5. Learn to lob.
6. Find out how to make a drop shot that dies in the service box.
7. Call “yours” when you know a lob is destined to get over your head and land behind you.
8. Call “mine” when the lob is in your kill zone and you’re going to hit an overhead smash.
9. Speaking of overheads — learn to hit one with the correct grip.
10. Don’t return serve to the net player on important points just to see if you can catch him sleeping.
There you go!
You now have 10 options from which to choose that are guaranteed to improve your tennis results!
OK, now let’s whittle those 10 down a bit.
We can just downright eliminate Nos. 1 through 4! What was I thinking?
Of the remaining six, Nos. 7 and 8 require just saying one word, “yours” or “mine.”
Those should be doable.

No. 10 requires just not being totally stupid — not hitting a return serve toward the net player. So I’m sure we can all handle that one.

Nos. 5, 6 and 9 will require some actual work, but if you apply yourself, those skills are attainable and will have a powerfully positive effect on your match-play success.
Don’t wait till next year to receive the help you need to succeed. Act now and maybe next year you can try to lose weight or quit smoking — again.
